Unscientific Research – Cigar Trademark Filings Over Past 100+ Years

I’ve been a little busy. Let’s leave it at that. In an attempt to further educate on all things cigar trademark related, here’s the result of a completely unscientific study I conducted:

Trademark filings which contain the word “cigar”

January 1, 1911 through December 31, 1920 – 30
January 1, 1921 through December 31, 1930 – 100
January 1, 1931 through December 31, 1940 – 61
January 1, 1941 through December 31, 1950 – 174
January 1, 1951 through December 31, 1960 – 157
January 1, 1961 through December 31, 1970 – 550
January 1, 1971 through December 31, 1980 – 470
January 1, 1981 through December 31, 1990 – 764
January 1, 1991 through December 31, 2000 – 4,367
January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2010 – 6,785
January 1, 2011 through present (December 17, 2013) -3,309 [estimated 10 year filings ending December 31, 2020 – 9,900]

While the number of cigar stores has increased over this period of time, I am certain (no data to back up) that the number of cigar smokers has diminished during this time.
